‘Tommy & Tuppence’: What’s Going On With Tuppence’s Mysterious Marriage?
In their first appearance in Agatha Christie‘s 1922 novel The Secret Adversary, childhood friends Tommy and Tuppence run into each other by chance in a London Tube station after World War I. Broke as a joke and in desperate need of employment, the duo decides to start their own detective agency, where they find plenty of adventure and, eventually, romance.
In BritBox’s upcoming Tommy & Tuppence, starring Josh Dylan and Antonia Thomas in the title roles, Agatha Christie’s iconic crime-solving duo returns in a new six-part contemporary adaptation, but there are a few notable changes. One of the biggest has to do with their relationship, as this new version introduces Tuppence as a married woman!
Exactly who her husband is and what happened between them remains something of a mystery. Details about her marriage are being kept very hush-hush, adding another wrinkle to her relationship with Tommy and raising one very obvious question: What does Tuppence being married mean for the crime-solving duo’s famous romance?

“Tuppence is sort of completely chaotic,” star Thomas told Swooon. “At the beginning of it, her life is sort of all over the place, and actually Tommy makes Tuppence pause and have to like really think about her actions and think about the choices that she’s making in her life, and [how you] actually you can’t be completely impulsive about everything.”

“She’s married in our version of it, to someone else, but she’s at a real crossroads in her life and doesn’t know what she’s doing,” explained Thomas. “So he kind of forces her to stop and think and really kind of be a bit more present instead of just avoidant.”
With her being married, Tuppence isn’t quite the carefree, spirited single she was originally portrayed as in Christie’s early books. In this version, Tommy and Tuppence once dated many years ago, and a chance reunion followed by an enticing mystery brings the two back into each other’s lives.
But where Tuppence’s marriage stands remains unclear. It’s a dicey situation, especially since the spark between the two is quite evident. Even in the trailer, it’s clear that old feelings between the former couple are bubbling back to the surface, suggesting their reunion could stir up more than a few emotions.
“Definitely dicey,” said Thomas. “I’d say that in and amongst the crimes that they’re trying to solve, that’s the big heart of the piece, which Tuppence is very much pulled in two directions in regards to figuring out what she wants and the rekindling of ‘this’ — them coming back together. It’s sort of stuff that’s been left unfinished. So it’s tricky.”
However, Dylan believes that despite the inconvenient marriage, their meeting is clandestine.
“Even from the get-go with the show. It all feels a little bit like predestined, though. There’s something in the air. There’s a kind of magic in the air. It feels like such a random thing that we bump into each other. It kind of feels like meant to be.”
