‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ Boss Talks Season 4 Plans for Jackie & Cole

It wouldn’t be My Life with the Walter Boys finale without a jaw-dropping cliffhanger and unresolved relationship drama. Season 3 doesn’t leave Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) undecided between brothers Cole (Noah LaLonde) and Alex (Ashby Gentry) like the previous two seasons, but it does leave us with plenty of questions going into Season 4. (Warning: Spoilers for My Life with the Walter Boys Season 3 ahead!)

Two seasons of tension finally pay off when Jackie and Cole become a couple in the Season 3 premiere. Despite working well together for a few episodes, Cole begins to doubt if he’s a good influence on Jackie, who starts to loosen the reins on her life a little bit. Not wanting to hold her back from reaching her full potential, Cole says hurtful things he doesn’t mean to sever their relationship fully — but he realizes his mistake by the finale.

As Cole races to win Jackie back, a driver runs his car off the road, and it flips, leaving Cole’s fate up in question. Meanwhile, Jackie kisses Eliot (Naveen Paddock), her childhood friend who reminds her of her old life, at the community space’s opening-night party. On the other side of town, Alex realizes that he wants a relationship with Kiley (Mya Lowe) after all, but his confession is cut short by the arrival of Kiley’s boyfriend, Dylan (Kolton Stewart).

Don’t expect a time jump like there was between Seasons 1 and 2, when Jackie left Silver Falls for New York. “We would probably be looking at coming up quite close after Season 3 would end,” showrunner Melanie Halsall told Swooon.

She continued, “I think the best thing I could say about Season 4 is we will continue that sophistication and maturity. That’s definitely something we really feel worked for Season 3 really well, and we want to continue. The characters are getting older, the audience is getting older, and we want to really kind of capitalize on that maturity and sophistication that we started in Season 3. So it will feel like an elevation yet again from our show.”

During the Season 3 promo last year, Halsall told Swooon that she “would love to continue the story as they get older and mature” when we asked if she was interested in diving into college territory. She added, “I’m fascinated by these characters and these stories in this world, and I would love to keep telling these stories for as long as people keep watching them, would like to keep watching them.”

Season 3 covers Cole’s final semester of high school. He hasn’t reached graduation yet, but he does find out he was accepted into the University of Texas at Austin. Remember, Jackie is a year younger than Cole. She would potentially need to stay behind in Colorado if Cole left. How or if his car accident in the Season 3 finale impacts his future remains to be seen.

There’s also the matter of Cole’s future with Jackie now that Eliot is in the picture. Halsall explained that, to Jackie, Eliot represents “a life she might have had” and safety. “But equally, that also means walking backward, which isn’t necessarily what she might want to do,” the showrunner explained. “So I think interesting things are happening with Eliot, where they are right now by the end of Season 3 and possibly in the future. It’s a difficult thing for her to navigate, in a different way than Alex and Cole were difficult. It’s almost bigger in a way.”

Cole also has quite a bit of work to do if he wants to get back in Jackie’s good graces. Even though he lies to drive her away, he still weaponizes her insecurities during their Episode 7 split. “I mean, it’s going to be very, very hard to come back from that particular breakup,” Halsall said. “We know, of course, that Cole did it with the best of intentions, misguided though they may be, but Jackie doesn’t, and so it’s going to be difficult for those two to come back together, I think, for a while.”

As we start to see in Season 3 with Jackie winning her track meet and securing a prestigious college admissions counselor, Jackie’s life doesn’t stop after the breakup. In fact, she thrives in spite of the emotional hit. “I really wanted to show that Jackie will get over that hurt,” Halsall said. “She will become stronger for it.”

What about Silver Falls other new love triangle? Since she first wrote Kiley’s crush on Alex in the script, Halsall wanted to have Alex reciprocate his best friend’s feelings. That came to be in the finale, though Kiley seemingly chooses Dylan before Alex can fully explain his feelings. That’s not the end of the Alex and Kiley drama, though. “I always think there’s some complications in that relationship that need to be explored,” the showrunner promised.
