‘East of Eden’ Premiere Date Revealed & More Details on Netflix’s Book Adaptation
More than 70 years after John Steinbeck‘s classic 1952 novel, East of Eden, was first adapted for the big screen, Netflix is bringing the multigenerational story to life in a new limited series. Oscar nominee Florence Pugh leads the show as Cathy Ames.
On August 18, the streamer revealed the first photos of its 2026 version of East of Eden, which give a glimpse at Cathy’s complicated relationships with brothers Adam and Charles Trask. East of Eden is sure to be one of the most talked-about shows of the fall TV season. From the cast to a refresher on what East of Eden is all about, to showrunner Zoe Kazan‘s connection to the story, these are all the essential details about this book-to-screen adaptation.
Who is in the East of Eden cast?
Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, the cunning antihero of Steinbeck’s story, and she’s also an executive producer. “I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy,” Kazan, who is also a writer and executive producer of the show, told Tudum.
Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask, Cathy’s husband. Mike Faist plays Charles Trask, Adam’s half-brother. Netflix released a still from the moment Adam and Cathy take a wedding portrait with Charles, and there’s so much to analyze. Cathy can be seen looking over at Charles, while an oblivious Adam stares straight ahead.

“I think our Adam could have played Charles and our Charles could have played Adam,” Kazan told Vanity Fair. “And actually, when we were casting Cal and Aron, I had all the actors read both parts, because it was really important to me that there was a sense of ‘this could have gone either way.'”
The cast also includes Hoon Lee as Lee, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciaran Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joe Anders as Aron Trask, and The Sunrise on the Reaping star Joseph Zada as Caleb “Cal” Trask.

When will East of Eden premiere?
East of Eden will premiere October 1 on Netflix. All seven episodes will be available on the day of the premiere.
What is East of Eden about?
The official logline from Netflix reads: “This modern interpretation of Steinbeck’s masterpiece will explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames.”
East of Eden is a retelling of the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, one rife with sibling rivalry and the resentment that breeds from rejection. Adam marries Cathy, and she gives birth to their twin boys, Cal and Aron, after they move to California. Soon after delivering the twins, Cathy leaves her family behind. We’re not going to spoil the entire saga for you, but the tale does jump forward in time to when the boys are older.
What is Zoe Kazan’s connection to East of Eden?
Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film version of East of Eden, which made James Dean a household name.
“The movie isn’t a super faithful adaptation of the small part of the book that it is adapting,” Kazan said of her grandfather’s adaptation. “What I felt was the whole epic story is an opportunity to explore, to fall in love with all these characters.”
