Honestly, it’s shaping up to be quite the year for period dramas. From The Other Bennet Sister to My Brilliant Career, there’s plenty to keep us entertained. BritBox has played its part in reviving our love of historical fiction on screen, bringing us Victoria and, now, 2018’s Vanity Fair.

Vanity Fair is based on the 1848 William Makepeace Thackeray novel of the same name. The seven-part series originally aired in 2018 and has recently found a new audience on BritBox.

The series stars two familiar faces, one of whom is no stranger to the period drama genre. We’ve got House of the Dragon‘s Olivia Cooke in the lead role of Becky Sharp, alongside Bridgerton‘s Claudia Jessie as Amelia Sedley. Rounding out the main cast are Tom Bateman as Captain Rawdon Crawley and Michael Palin as the author himself, William Makepeace Thackeray – we love when things get meta.

Across seven episodes, there was plenty of scheming, marriages, and deaths. So, who does everyone end up with in the Vanity Fair series? Here’s your guide.

Who does Becky end up with?

Honestly, Becky is for those of us who idolized Sharpay. (If you know, you know.) And it’s not just viewers who love her, as countless characters are swayed by her, too.

In the first episode, Amelia’s daft brother falls for Becky’s charms and drunkenly tried to propose to her. She later used this to her advantage when scheming over some horses.

Becky ended up married to Rawdon, although the pair became estranged after he caught her with Lord Steyne (Anthony Head). But Rawdon had worse luck than choosing a gold-digging wife (complimentary), as he was dispatched by cruel Lord Steyne to Coventry Island, where he died a slow, lingering death from yellow fever. He left behind Becky and their son, who inherited the family estate. The son wanted nothing to do with his mother.

The ending saw Becky wind up with Jos (David Fynn), known by his father as the “lardy loafer” (there’s a Hinge prompt if I’ve ever seen one). This was a key book-to-series difference in the Vanity Fair series.

In the book, Jos dies in suspicious circumstances (it’s suggested Becky may be responsible, bad girl), and she returns to England with a fat insurance payout and a lot of disgrace. Here, Jos was still standing beside her as she ran off to ride the carousel with her free-spirited energy.

Did it leave things open-ended? Was it a last redemption for Becky? Who knows.

Who does Amelia end up with?

At the start of the series, our sweet Amelia was engaged to George (Charlie Rowe). We weren’t wholly convinced by it, but alas, she married him, much to his family’s disappointment. He was cut off from his family and his inheritance before George met his end at the Battle of Waterloo, leaving Amelia widowed.

But would she end up with Dobbin (Johnny Flynn)? That was the real question, and one the series kept hanging until the final minutes. She had sent him away when he questioned her renewed friendship with Becky. The couple had an argument in which Dobbin told Amelia that his 13-year love for her was over, before apparently setting sail for India.

Becky later produced the treacherous letter George had sent to her before his death. Amelia confessed that she knew all along that her husband was never as perfect as she imagined… and that she had already written to Dobbin to tell him so after a change of heart. She sent the letter! But was it too late?!

Amelia and her son waited at the dock, and we waited right there with them. Then, out of the mist comes… Dobbin! He leaps off his lil rowboat and embraces Amelia. Don’t lie, you teared up there. We did, too. The end.
