Lauren & Kit in ‘Ransom Canyon’: Should They or Shouldn’t They Get Together?

Casey W. Johnson and Lizzy Greene in 'Ransom Canyon' Season 1
Netflix

There are so many ships to root for on Ransom Canyon. That’s part of what makes it such a delicious new drama. There are established relationships like Staten (Josh Duhamel) and Quinn (Minka Kelly), or maybe you’re Team Davis (Eoin Macken)? Perhaps Yancy (Jack Schumacher) and Ellie (Marianly Tejada) caught your eye, or were you caught up in the high school love triangle?

Lauren Brigman (Lizzy Greene) and Lucas Russell (Garett Wareing) went through a real rollercoaster in Ransom Canyon Season 1, but the young lovebirds found their way back together by the season finale. However, Lauren also had some fiery chemistry with someone else on the show, and no, we’re not talking about her ex-boyfriend. A tornado forced her to hunker down with Lucas’ older brother Kit (Casey W. Johnson) in the family trailer. He was so protective of her, and the two seemed to connect on a deeper level than Lauren did with most of the characters on the show. It made us start wondering, is Kit the Russell brother who Lauren truly belongs with? (Note: Wareing has even confirmed that there was “something there” between Lauren and Kit in the tornado episode.)

There was only one way to find out, and that was to run it through Swooon’s trusted Should They/Shouldn’t They rubric. See the pros and cons, and then vote for whether or not you think Ransom Canyon should explore this potential romance in Season 2 or beyond.

PRO: The chemistry is there

Sparks were flying for Kit and Lauren during Ransom Canyon Season 1—and it wasn’t from a tornado hitting power lines. The two were stuck hiding out from the storm in the Russell family trailer, and the chemistry was very much there. It started as tension because Kit did not approve of Lauren and Lucas’ relationship, but it became obvious that these two could vibe. Maybe that tension Kit was projecting about having Lauren in the trailer was really the early signs of an attraction, and it could blossom into something more.

CON: She's dating his brother.

This is a pretty big con. Lauren spent the majority of Season 1 in a different love triangle between Kit’s brother Lucas and her first love, Reid Collins (Andrew Liner). Lucas won that fight in spades, proving he’d do anything to win Lauren’s heart. They had romantic kisses in the middle of the street and grand romantic gestures in front of the whole town. The only person he might be more loyal to is his older brother. So, there would definitely be some feelings of betrayal if Kit and Lauren were to get involved. Lucas might never recover, and he doesn’t deserve that. However, the drama would be elite…

PRO: Kit and Lauren will both be in Texas.

As adorable as Lauren and Lucas were in Season 1, he’s got big decisions to make when it comes to his future. He’s got acceptance letters from every major school he applied to. Lauren was putting all of her eggs in the University of Texas basket, but even that seems like a long shot after injuring her shoulder. If Lauren truly wants what’s best for Lucas, then she’ll make sure he goes to one of those fancy schools so he can get the best shot at making a future for himself. Unfortunately, that would mean long-distance…leaving Lauren in Texas and without a scholarship to UT, but more specifically in Ransom Canyon. She and Kit can commiserate over missing Lucas and get a chance to know each other better. That proximity is a really powerful thing when it comes to new relationships forming.

CON: Kit slept with her mom.

Okay, so there’s even more complicated history between the two. Kit had an affair with Lauren’s mom, and her dad (Philip Winchester) is very aware of it. If he had reservations about her dating Lucas, he would definitely put his foot down when it comes to a Lauren and Kit romantic connection. Also, is it possible to hook up with someone when you know they’ve seen your mom naked? That’s got to make the dirty talk awkward. There would have to be ground rules set about when that affair could be discussed (ahem, never) or this would never work. Kit is bad-boy endearing enough that he could potentially make Lauren forget about the affair, but it would take a lot of work.

PRO: Kit's redemption era.

What we learned about Kit during Ransom Canyon Season 1 is that he’s extremely loyal and willing to go above and beyond for the people he loves. He’d do anything to make sure that Lucas had a bright future, including emancipating his little brother. He was willing to go to prison to protect Lauren’s mom. That’s the kind of ride-or-die Lauren needs after feeling abandoned by her mom and overlooked by her dad. Imagine if Kit used those stunning personality skills to make a better life for himself. Maybe he teams up with Yancy, who is also in need of a redemption arc, and the two of them can get their lives back on track for each other, making them the perfect men for Lauren and Ellie.
