9 ‘Vampire Diaries’ Pairs That Should’ve Been Couples: Bamon & More

Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) love triangle with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) may have been the heart of The Vampire Diaries, but they weren’t the only ones who found romance. In fact, pretty much all of the characters had a relationship at some point, though to varying degrees of success.

But as many couples as there were, the CW show also missed plenty of opportunities. There were some characters that had tons of romantic potential and chemistry, and yet they never officially got together. We’re looking at you, Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Damon! Some of these pairings didn’t have to be endgame, but it would have been very interesting to throw in a romantic curveball here and there.

Keep reading for our thoughts on Bamon and eight other duos that should’ve been an item. Let us know in the comments if you agree, and if there are any you think we missed.

Arielle Kebbel and Paul Wesley as Lexi and Stefan on 'The Vampire Diaries'
The CW

Stefan & Lexi

Stefan and Lexi (Arielle Kebbel) would’ve had an amazing best friends-to-lovers arc, and we’ll die on that hill. We’ll take them over Stefan and Caroline any day. They helped and protected each other time and time again, and maybe most importantly, she helped Stefan loosen up. TVD killed Lexi off way too soon, but at least in Season 5, she saves Stefan from going into Hell. We’re telling you, it’s true love! Maybe they reunited in the afterlife once Stefan died. We can only hope.

Michael Malarkey and Candice King on 'The Vampire Diaries'
The CW

Enzo & Caroline

Sorry again, Steroline and Benzo fans, but Caroline (Candice King) and Enzo’s (Michael Malarkey) chemistry was off the charts. We still think the show missed an opportunity with them. Remember their Season 6 roadtrip? The flirting! The banter! At points, it really seemed like TVD might’ve been steering the characters toward a romance, but they never really let them bond on a deeper level. They saved that for Bonnie and Enzo instead. Honestly, we didn’t hate Benzo, but Carenzo would’ve been fun.

Nina Dobrev and Daniel Gillies as Elena and Elijah in The Vampire Diaries
The CW

Elena & Elijah

We know, the idea of a teenager being with an Original vampire is a little disturbing, but we’re choosing to ignore that. Plus, Elena stood up to Elijah (Daniel Gillies) on multiple occasions. They trusted and respected each other, so it makes it a little less creepy.

And we can’t forget about their Season 4 kiss. Elena may have been pretending to be Katherine when they locked lips, but the passion was there. Not to mention, pretty much every interaction they had before then was charged with something. Maybe we were just reading too much into it. In any case, Elena and Elijah could’ve been a power couple if he hadn’t left for New Orleans.

Nina Dobrev and Chris Wood as Katherine and Kai on 'The Vampire Diaries'
Bob Mahoney / The CW Network / Everett Collection

Katherine & Kai

Talk about a match made in toxic heaven. We’ve seen people ship Kai (Chris Wood) with Bonnie, and while we love enemies-to-lovers as much as the next person, that would’ve been a little too problematic. Kai is simply too much of a sociopath to form a genuine bond with someone as good as Bonnie. Katherine, on the other hand, is on the same level as Kai. They could backstab each other to their hearts’ content. Alas, their paths unfortunately never crossed.

Ian Somerhalder and Michael Malarkey as Damon and Enzo in The Vampire Diaries
The CW

Damon & Enzo

Damon only ever had relationships with women in TVD, so this one is a bit of a crackship, but hear us out. Damon and Enzo had a deep connection that could’ve easily turned into a romance. Heck, they spent half a decade together as prisoners of the Augustine Society. It would have been the perfect setup for them to become lovers! Later on in the series, they worked well together despite the occasional betrayal. We’re not saying that Damon and Enzo should’ve been endgame, but we wouldn’t have hated their relationship.

Ian Somerhalder and Claire Holt in The Vampire Diaries as Damon and Rebekah
Bob Mahoney / The CW Network / Everett Collection

Rebekah & Damon

Another morally grey pairing that we would’ve rooted for is Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Damon. Sure, they hooked up at one point in the series, but it was brief and didn’t mean anything. Had Damon gotten over the fact that Rebekah tried to kill Elena, and they actually gotten together, their relationship would’ve been explosive in the best way possible. Rebekah and Damon matched each other in their emotional intensity. They wouldn’t have made it in the long run, but it would’ve been fun while it lasted.

Scarlett Byrne and Kat Graham as Nora and Bonnie on 'The Vampire Diaries'
The CW

Bonnie & Nora

Graham campaigned for Bonnie to be bisexual, and the actress herself saw potential with Bonnie and the Heretic Nora (Scarlett Byrne). Bonnie lacked solid love interests for most of the series until they pushed her with Enzo at the very end. (Don’t even get us started on Jeremy and Bonnie.)

Bonnie and Nora, on the other hand, had a natural chemistry during their Season 7 interactions, and they went from sort-of enemies to friends, but they never took that next step. It’s a shame that they didn’t, if you ask us.

Kat Graham and Ian Somerhalder as Bonnie and Damon on 'The Vampire Diaries'
The CW

Bonnie & Damon

Bonnie and Damon, you could have been everything! We aren’t the only ones who noticed a vibe between them when they were trapped in that prison world in Season 6. Until that point, they were mostly chilly toward each other when they weren’t reluctant allies. But their forced proximity helped them form a genuine, unbreakable friendship. Sure, we love the fact that the show gave Damon a platonic female friend, but would it have killed them to make Bamon endgame, especially once Dobrev left the show? We would’ve been on board.

Steven R. McQueen and Nathaniel Buzolic as Jeremy and Kol in The Vampire Diaries
The CW

Kol & Jeremy

This one is really out of left field, but we’re going to make our case anyway. Anna (Malese Jow) was the only love interest we thought really gelled with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), but we think it could’ve been even more interesting if he’d had a relationship with Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic).

A hunter and an Original vampire? Yes, please. The two became friends in Season 3, though it was later revealed that Kol was simply keeping an eye on him. If they’d been together, Kol’s return in Season 4 would’ve been much more impactful. His death would’ve been, too, since he dies by Jeremy’s hand in order to get the vampire cure. The angst would’ve been top tier.
