Wedding bells are ringing, rom-com lovers, because Jasmine Guillory‘s beloved debut novel, The Wedding Date, is coming to Netflix! Now all we need is the perfect cast.
The Wedding Date follows Alexa Monroe, who agrees to be Drew Nichol’s plus-one after a chance encounter in a stalled elevator. While their relationship starts out fake, fulfilling Drew’s need to bring a date to his ex’s wedding, their feelings quickly become real. The problem is, Drew lives in Los Angeles, and Alexa lives in Berkeley. Can these high-powered professionals make their wedding sparks last, or is their long-distance relationship already doomed to fail?
Netflix announced that TheWedding Date is being adapted by Tracy Oliver, the voice behind Girls Trip, The Sun Is Also a Star, and Harlem. If that wasn’t enough, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have joined as producers with their production company Archewell Productions. Talk about a real-life fairytale!

Amber Riley as Alexa
While Alexa Monroe is best known for getting caught in the elevator with her soon-to-be fake boyfriend and a collection of celebratory cheeses, she’s also a politics baddie, serving as the chief of staff for Berkeley’s mayor. To portray our donut-loving FMC, we’ve picked Amber Riley, who proved she was rom-com lead material when she busted the windows out of Kurt’s car during the first season of Glee, all because her character, Mercedes, thought he was in love with Rachel. Every plus one should have that energy.

Dylan O'Brien as Drew
Drew Nichols is McDreamy of Grey’s Anatomy fame and every Emily Henry lead, all wrapped up into one swoonworthy groomsman. From looming in the corner of the elevator to becoming a certified long-distance yearner, when we think of Drew Nichols, we see Teen Wolf‘s Dylan O’Brien. Both O’Brien and Riley are seriously charismatic, and we can see this pairing having chemistry that is off the walls, just as Jasmine Guillory intended.

Lewis Pullman as Josh
Nobody starts dating his bestie’s ex and then asks said bestie to be in his bridal party like Josh Rogers. To portray this complicated soul, we’ve selected Lewis Pullman, whose recent performance inThunderbolts* had us daydreaming of his rom-com future, while shuddering in our seats as The Void wreaked havoc on NYC. Maybe only messing up one guy’s life will be a better look.

Sarah Catherine Hook as Molly
We’ve caught a glimpse of Sarah Catherine Hook in People We Meet on Vacation, and we never want The White Lotus star’s rom-com era to end. We’d love to see Hook as Molly, Drew’s ex-girlfriend and Josh’s soon-to-be wife. While caught in a serious situation, this is an inherently funny role, so Hook is the perfect gal for the job.

Ego Nwodim as Olivia
Alexa and Olivia’s sisterhood lies at the center of Jasmine Gulliory’s novel, but that isn’t to say that their relationship is always perfect. To capture Alexa and Olivia’s banter and sisterly squabbles alongside Amber Riley, we’ve chosen former Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim. Nwodim is absolutely hilarious, and we’re definitely hoping to see a touch of Miss Eggy in Alexa’s lawyer sister.

Sean Teale as Carlos
Casting Carlos is no easy feat, as we are hopeful that The Wedding Date movie announcement implies that the book’s sequel, The Proposal, will get it’s own movie, too. For that reason, even though Carlos is a side character now, we were cognizant that we were dreaming up a future film’s lead as well. Sean Teale, who recently starred on Doctor Odyssey, was born to be a rom-com lead. We’re taking a page out of his Reign character Conde’s book to say he’ll make the perfect Carlos.
