Wednesday Addams’ (Jenna Ortega) romances were a hot topic when Wednesday Season 1 dropped, and with Season 2 on our doorstep, we want to open up the discussion again. Particularly regarding Wednesday and Tyler (Hunter Doohan).
We all know that Xavier Thorpe is out of the picture with actor Percy Hynes White‘s exit, so that budding relationship is shot. On the other corner of Season 1’s love triangle was Tyler Galpin, who will appear in the next installment. Fans will remember, though, that he turned out to be the evil Hyde monster, so things aren’t looking good for them either.
Even though Ortega has said that Season 2 will lean more into the horror and less into the romance, we can’t help but wonder if the show might be building toward a Tyler redemption arc. Is there any chance of Wednesday making them love interests again? Below, we state our case for and against the duo getting back together, putting them through Swooon’s Should They/Shouldn’t They rubric. Take a look, then tell us what you think in the poll below!

PRO: Wednesday has (or had) real feelings for him.
Wednesday is famous for being closed off and showing no emotion, but Tyler seemed to rattle her like no one else could, even Xavier. That’s why his betrayal hurt her (and us) so badly. The show might put Tyler on the path to redemption, since he technically was a pawn in someone else’s game. Maybe then Wednesday’s original feelings will return, though we doubt it’ll be in Season 2. It’ll probably take a lot of time. Still, she and Tyler have so much romantic chemistry that we’d hate to see it go to waste.

CON: He's a bit too evil.
Christina Ricci‘s Marilyn Thornhill (aka Laurel Gates) turns out to be the big bad in Season 1, pulling Tyler’s strings and using him to do her bidding. Considering the circumstances, is he completely and totally evil? Did he just lose his sanity? It’s up for debate, and we’ll likely find out in Season 2. If the show paints him out to be a true monster, however, then Tyler may be a bit too immoral even for the morally grey Wednesday. After all, he does justify killing people because Nevermore was inadvertently responsible for his mother’s death. (But again, is that the real Tyler talking?)

PRO: It seems fitting for Wednesday to have a villain love interest.
Ortega once said that it made “no sense” for her character to even be in a love triangle. Even though we’ll never say no to a romantic storyline here at Swooon, we’re almost inclined to agree with the actress. If she has to have a relationship, it makes sense that it would be a villain-type like Tyler. Honestly, we thought he was too nice for Wednesday at first, so now that he’s revealed his darker side, they might be better suited for each other.

CON: Wednesday might not be able to trust him again.
Tyler’s Season 1 betrayal doesn’t really provide a great foundation for a future relationship. It might be next to impossible for him to become trustworthy figure in Wednesday’s eyes, especially since she’s so slow to lean on other people. She’s likely (and understandably) going to be entirely jaded and wary of others in Season 2.
However, Doohan told EW that the Hyde “takes over a little bit more and it happens more often and the lines between the two get blurred.” He added, “We’ve also never seen Tyler, now that Thornhill is dead, he doesn’t have a master anymore.” So, is it completely out of the realm of possibility that he comes back from the edge and turns into a dependable character? Either way, it’s going to take a ton of work on Tyler’s part to get into Wednesday’s good graces.
Netflix
PRO: Tyler gets Wednesday and her quirks.
Even though he was trying to butter her up so that Gates could resurrect Crackstone, Tyler still proved to get Wednesday in ways others don’t. He was able to get past her hard, morbid exterior, so he obviously understands her to some degree. It’s due to his own dark nature, which we later find out. Regardless of whether or not his interest was genuine, that understanding could make them a good match down the line (after he redeems himself, of course).
Netflix
CON: It makes more sense for Wednesday to have no romance.
Circling back to the “Wednesday should have no romance” argument: We have to admit that Wednesday’s apathetic character doesn’t seem like the type to get swept away in a romance. What’s more, she explicitly stated that she wasn’t interested in love, so there’s a chance that maybe she got entangled with Tyler out of curiosity rather than genuine romantic feelings. Maybe it’s for the best that the show steers clear of love in Season 2 and focuses on Wednesday’s friendships instead. It could be a good opportunity to show that platonic love is just as important as romantic love.
