There’s never a shortage of drama on The Bachelor. Even on seasons when the leads have tried to avoid things getting messy, something unexpected is bound to happen.

For our 14 Days of Swooon, Season 29 star Grant Ellis opened up to Swooon about why he didn’t find it necessary to avoid moments of tension while filming the show.

“I think as the lead, you have to be involved [with the drama],” he shared. “You don’t see everything that happens. So you have to be very involved. You have to give everybody a fair shot, even if you feel like somebody’s wrong in a situation. You have to hear the whole story and kind of make a decision off your judgement. [I] just tried to be involved and be patient. Patience is the main thing. [And] letting things play out fully before you make a decision.”

Previews for Season 29 have hinted at drama to come. Of course, there’s the classic, “Can I steal you for a second?” storyline, with one woman interrupting others’ time with the lead to score more one-on-one moments, ultimately pissing off some of the other ladies. “How much attention do you need?” Alli Jo Hinkes asked Zoe McGrady in one clip.

Grant even seems to be directly involved in one situation. Another preview showed Carolina Sofia Quixano confronting the former basketball star and telling him, “I heard some things that you said to someone.” He responded by insisting, “That’s a lie!”

Of course, at the end of the day, it’s all about finding love. Grant has made it clear that he’s ready to get engaged, settle down, and start a family. He’s looking for someone who’s on the same page.

As he told Swooon, he’s interested in “somebody with a really kind heart and somebody who – this is going to sound really weird – but somebody who’s cool. Somebody who I can just be myself with and make jokes and laugh and I don’t have to feel uptight and feel like I’m being somebody who I’m not.”
