Soap veteran Cameron Mathison and his ex-wife, Vanessa Mathison, split in 2024 after 22 years of marriage. The couple made the “difficult decision to part ways” after two decades together but remain dedicated to coparenting their two kids, Lucas and Leila.

In a new interview, the General Hospital star opened up about his marriage and where he stands with his ex today. The All My Children alum also gave insight into how his kids handled the split.

“We had a beautiful marriage for many, many, many years, and recently been separated but [we’re] very close and good friends,” Mathison told costar Maurice Benard on Benard’s State of Mind podcast. The actor and his wife met in 1998 and married in 2002.

The soap star was candid about his struggles in recent years, including his cancer diagnosis, the death of his mother, and losing his home in the California wildfires. Mathison revealed that he “stayed with Vanessa for a while” after his house burned down.

“Eventually, I wanted to kind of have my own space. I’m sure she wanted to have her own space because we’ve been separated now for almost a year and a half, two years,” he explained. He added that this tragic situation has “brought us much closer together for sure.”

As for the former couple’s kids, Mathison said they’re “devastated” over losing their home on top of everything else. The actor told Benard that his kids “cherished” their parents’ relationship and “had us on a pedestal.”

Mathison continued, “We had a beautiful marriage for a long time. They saw us, and they used to talk to us about it. Things happen, things change, fell apart, [and] that broke their hearts.”

When it comes to dating again, Mathison joked with Benard that could become the Golden Bachelor. “Maybe I’m not Golden enough yet. Maybe I’m the Silver Bachelor,” Mathison quipped.
