‘9-1-1’: Should Athena Get a New Love Interest in Season 9? (POLL)
Don’t worry: It pains us just as much to write this as it does for you to read it. But we know TV, and the question at least has to be posed: Following Bobby’s (Peter Krause) heartbreaking death, which took away one of our favorite couples on TV, should 9-1-1 give Athena (Angela Bassett) a new love interest?
Over the course of the show’s first eight seasons, leading up to their heartbreaking farewell as he died after becoming infected with a super-strain of a virus for which he gave the only anti-viral to Chimney (Kenneth Choi), we watched the beginning, middle, and end of their relationship. Their relationship had its ups and downs, and neither was perfect, but that’s what made it so good. They were each other’s second chance after her marriage ended and he lost his family in a fire that he accidentally caused, and that’s something they truly understood, especially after they nearly drowned together on their honeymoon.
What made them such a good couple was watching them overcome their problems and save each other more than once, along with being the kind of first responders that Los Angeles needed. Plus, who didn’t love watching them team up to do a little crime-solving every so often?
There was no question that, had Bobby lived, they would have been endgame. There never would have been anyone else for either of them. But Bobby did die, and now Athena must figure out how to move on. We saw the start of that at the end of the Season 8 finale, when she put the house she and Bobby were building together up for sale. We’ll have to see where she’s living in Season 9.
But should part of her moving forward also involve a new love interest? The show would have to introduce a new character, and it would take quite some time to build a new love story for her that fans would want to see play out onscreen. As hard as it may be to see it, that might depend on how much longer the show goes and if Angela Bassett stays until the end. After all, we do want to see her happy, and while she doesn’t need a relationship for that, romance is inherently part of TV characters’ lives.
