‘You Deserve Each Other’: What We Know About Penn Badgley & Meghann Fahy’s Rom-Com
Here at Swooon, there’s nothing we love more than rom-coms and book-to-screen adaptations, and the upcoming film You Deserve Each Other is going to give us both!
The Amazon MGM movie, which was announced on June 30, is based on Sarah Hogle’s 2020 novel of the same name. Scroll down for everything we know about the upcoming adaptation.
Who will star in You Deserve Each Other?
The leads in the film are Meghann Fahy (Naomi) and Penn Badgley (Nick). They teased their casting by engaging in some Instagram banter shortly before the film was announced.
In a video, Badgley said, “Okay, so, I don’t usually do this, but my wife [Domino Kirke] and I just finished Sirens. Want to give her flowers. Now obviously there’s Julianne [Moore], there’s Kevin [Bacon], there’s Milly [Alcock], but this Meghann Fahy? This newcomer? This, like, refreshing, gawky beauty? Love it. Love you.”
While many fans immediately hopped into the comments section to let Badgley know that The White Lotus and The Bold Type star is far from a “newcomer,” Fahy wrote, “Penn! This is so kind. Thank you. Tell Domino I say hi. And that her taste is flawless.”

Things seemingly took a sour turn when Fahy told Badgley to “chill on the body stuff,” in reference to his comment about her being “gawky.” He replied, “Whoa I’ve obviously been very supportive and complimentary but this feels like a trap.” Fahy wrote back, “There you go again with that trapping thing. Heard you did a lot of that on your show. I never watched it.”
The back and forth continued, leaving some fans utterly confused, until it was confirmed that the whole thing was a publicity stunt for the movie. Badgley then continued the fun by taking part in the “butterfly effect” social media trend and referencing Fahy’s guest role on an episode of Gossip Girl. “Butterfly effect is crazy because if I’d never met Meghann Fahy on the set of Gossip Girl my life would be exactly the same.”
The rest of the cast has yet to be announced, but the rom-com will be directed by Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, who wrote Never Been Kissed and He’s Just Not That Into You.
When will You Deserve Each Other be released?
A release date has not been confirmed at this time, but it likely won’t be until at least 2026.
What is You Deserve Each Other about?
Naomi (Fahy) and Nick (Badgley) are an engaged couple who cannot stand each other. With their wedding looming, they’re each doing whatever it takes to get the other to call it off (and be stuck footing the wedding bill). After a “battle of pranks, sabotage, and all-out emotional warfare,” Nick and Naomi end up falling in love with the last person they’d expect… each other.
Brett Haley and Marc Basch wrote the initial script, but it was revised by Silverstein and Kohn.
