David Corenswet’s Wife Plays Lois Lane in His Resurfaced Audition Tape
Superman director James Gunn watched over 400 auditions for the role of Clark Kent, but he knew David Corenswet was the right man for the job from the start. Turns out, Corenswet’s wife, Julia Best Warner, had the same gut feeling.
Before the movie came out in July, the actor revealed that even though he wasn’t always sure he should wear the cape, his wife believed in him as soon as he started auditioning. “I thought she was crazy, but she felt it from the beginning,” Corenswet told People of his wife’s reaction to him landing the part. “So if anything, I knew that she was gonna be even more excited than I was.”
Warner, who’s also an actor, even helped Corenswet put his first audition tape together. It recently surfaced on the internet, and the three-minute clip shows Corenswet acting out one of the movie’s most important scenes — according to Gunn — which sees Lois Lane interview Clark as Superman. Rachel Brosnahan went toe-to-toe with Corenswet in the final cut, but now fans can watch his wife read Lois’ lines.

Though she’s off-camera for most of the video, Best Warner acts out Lois confronting Superman about his violation of international laws. According to the Adventures in the Making of Superman documentary, it was Brosnahan’s audition scene as well. “They got these jobs based on their performances in this scene, so I think that we can get there,” Gunn said.
Corenswet says that his wife, whom he married in 2023 and welcomed a child with the following year, doesn’t really resemble the character in real life. “I don’t think my wife is the Lois Lane type,” he said in an interview. “I’m the one who frustrates her with the arguments and the questions. I’m the Lois Lane in my relationship; she’s the Superman.”

Beyond the self-tape, Warner played another major role in helping her husband land the part. When they were rewatching other Superman movies to prep for the audition, she had the idea that he write a letter outlining his thoughts for the character, which he ended up sending with his tape. “I had some strong thoughts that I told to my wife. I got very passionate as I often do watching movies,” he recalled. “I think she was the one who said, ‘You should probably get these ideas to [Gunn] in some form or another.'”
