Steve Burton is taking a break from Port Charles for a couple of months, but that doesn’t mean he’s not staying up to date on the ins and outs of what’s happening on General Hospital. In the April 5 edition of Burton and Bradford Anderson‘s That’s Awesome podcast, Anderson brought up a “chemistry scene” between Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst).
This sparked a discussion about chemistry testing characters for an onscreen romance. After 30 years on the soap, Burton has chemistry tested with actresses before. He acknowledged that these chemistry tests either work or don’t work. “But you just never know, first of all. That’s why they do these things,” he noted. Burton then brought up the onscreen romance between Jason and Sam (Kelly Monaco).
“With Kelly Monaco, it wasn’t even supposed to be a couple,” he said. “You just never know when it happens. So I guess it makes sense. I like Dante and Elizabeth. Sounds good.”
As fans will recall, Sam was initially involved with Jason’s best friend, Sonny (Maurice Benard). When Sam got pregnant with Sonny’s baby, Jason asked Sam to say the baby was his to protect Sonny’s marriage to Carly (then Tamara Braun). Sam and Jason’s love story was a slow burn. They lived together over the course of Sam’s pregnancy and bonded over the tragic loss of baby Lila.
Sam and Jason became one of GH’s most beloved supercouples. When Sam died in 2024, Jason shared a heartbreaking final scene with his former love. As he recalled their journey over two decades, Jason told Sam that she would always have a special place in his heart. “I remember it all. I will never forget. I promise,” Jason said.
Burton is currently on a brief hiatus from General Hospital. He decided to take a break to spend more time with his wife, Michelle Lundstrom, and his family. The couple recently took a trip to New York City, where Lundstrom is from, and traveled to Nashville with their kids.
