Country singer Riley Green performed his new love song, “My Way,” at the end of Marshals Season 1 Episode 9. It underscored a scene that showed a real moment of connection between Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos). After a hint of romantic interest first sparked in Andrea in Episode 7, we can’t help but wonder: Is Andrea going to be Kayce’s new love interest?
Andrea was rescued from the Dutton enemy Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz) by her crew in Marshals Episode 9, “In Low Places,” on Sunday, April 26, on CBS. Green, as Garrett, performed “My Way” for the Marshals team under the stars at Kayce’s East Camp home after the dust settled. Earlier in the episode, Kayce was the one who found and untied Andrea, carefully saying, “I’ve got you” as he helped her with worry in his eyes. In Episode 7, Andrea asked Kayce if he was ready to find love again, or at least start thinking about it, now that it’s been a year since his wife, Monica (Kesley Asbille), died. The look in Andrea’s eyes when he gave his answer showed a brief flicker of interest.
“My Way” is a romantic song about longing for a lost love. It made Kayce think of Monica, which made him teary. He stepped away from the group to look up at the stars. Andrea joined him; neither of them wanted to be alone. Kayce asked Andrea about one of her attempts to break free from Clegg, and then they had a noteworthy exchange.
“Can I ask you something?” Kayce said. “When you were in that house, did you make it through the door? Get it open?”
“You saw me?” Andrea asked in disbelief.
“No, I had a feeling,” he replied.
“Cowboy getting all cosmic on me,” Andrea said back.
“Bet you don’t have stars like this back east,” Kayce said, pivoting.
“Nope. Also, don’t have people kidnapping me back east,” she teased, as the cowboy smiled and said, “Fair.” That’s when Andrea got sentimental.
“Jury’s still out on this place, but as long as I’m here, I’m glad it’s on a team with you,” she said. Kayce looked at her as she looked up at the stars, and then Green sang the line, “If I had it my way, I would just lean in and kiss your lips right now,” as the episode ended. If you ask us, there’s no other way to read this scene than romantically.
Kayce has gone on two casual dates with a local woman named Dolly (Ellyn Jameson). He doesn’t appear to have strong feelings for her, though. It seems like Dolly is meant to open Kayce up to the idea of dating, and Andrea will be his first serious connection after Monica’s death.
Grimes previously told us that Kayce’s love life after Monica’s death is being carefully planned on the Yellowstone spinoff.
“That was something that I wanted to approach very carefully,” he told Swooon at CBS Fest on April 15. “I had a feeling that if we did it too fast, fans of the original show would be very upset, and it just didn’t feel right.”
“It’s hard to have the lead of a show not have some sort of romantic thing going on,” he continued, “but we’re taking our time with it. Hopefully, down the road at some point, when it feels right, he can have something like that in his life again.”
That time might be coming soon.
