‘Euphoria’: Is Nate In Love With Jules? Breaking Down That Season 3 Scene
What To Know
- A pivotal scene in Euphoria Season 3 features a nuanced conversation between Nate and Jules at Nate’s wedding.
- Show creator Sam Levinson breaks down Nate and Jules’ scene and where they stand with their complicated history.
Quite a bit of loud, messy drama goes down at Euphoria Season 3’s big wedding, but perhaps the most buzzworthy moment of all is the quiet but moving conversation between Jules (Hunter Schafer) and Nate (Jacob Elordi). (Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Euphoria Season 3 Episode 3.)
Fresh off the altar, Nate remarks that Jules is the last person he ever expected to attend his and Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) wedding. As they share a cigarette, Jules explains that both Rue (Zendaya) and Maddy (Alexa Demie) left, the latter because she got more emotional than expected. “You love who you love,” Nate responds while staring directly at Jules. How could we not read into that, especially considering Nate and Jules’ complicated history? Show creator Sam Levinson has weighed in on the scene and where the characters stand in Season 3.
“Jules must be going to this wedding for a reason,” Levinson said in a behind-the-scenes interview with HBO. “Part of it’s curiosity, part of it’s Rue. But I think that she wanted to see Nate. We know from previous seasons that Nate played a significant role in her mind.”
After he discovers Jules’ sex tape with his father (Eric Dane) in Season 1, Nate catfishes Jules on Grindr. He tries to get nude photos of her so that he can blackmail her and protect his family’s reputation. Along the way, Jules starts to fall for Nate and vice versa — or so it seems. In a rare moment of decency, Nate apologizes for his actions and hands the tape over to Jules in Season 2. “For what it’s worth, everything I ever said was true,” he says, though whether he means it is up for debate.
Fast-forward to five years post-high school, and Nate and Jules have what seems to be their first conversation since then. “There is the fantasy of what it could have been if he was not as troubled,” Levinson said of the wedding interaction. “‘Here we are. We’ve both sort of moved on, and things are the way they are.’ There’s a lot that’s unsaid in the scene between Nate and Jules, and its poignancy is in how the audience can interpret it in a multitude of ways.”

HBO
“Jules is still confused about her feelings for Nate and the person that she thought Nate was,” Schafer explained in another behind-the-scenes clip, with Elordi adding, “We’ve all grown up, and Nate’s better at listening and he’s maybe more aware of himself.”
Long story short, it seems Levinson and the Euphoria stars are avoiding giving a definitive answer regarding Nate and Jules’ feelings for each other after high school. Could Nate and Jules somehow wind up together by the end of Season 3, despite Nate’s marriage to Cassie? Should they end up together after everything Nate’s done, or has he really changed?
