If you’ve read (and loved) Red, White, and Royal Blue, you may already have heard of (and also fallen in love with) Alexis Hall’s 2020 novel Boyfriend Material. It’s an opposites-attract, fake-dating, gay rom-com, with plenty of angst and British humor, a recipe that’s made it take off on social media since it hit shelves. They’re also the perfect ingredients for a TV show, according to A24 UK.
“This is absolutely thrilling in ways where it feels scary to want something so much,” Hall wrote on Instagram. Cue the “pterodactyl screeching and daydreaming,” as the author puts it! What is Boyfriend Material‘s premiere date?
Deadline first reported that Hall’s book had been optioned on April 29, 2026, but there isn’t a release date quite yet. It has yet to be picked up by a network or streaming service.
“But what this news means on a practical level is that we’re only at the very, very beginning of an exceptionally long and uncertain process,” Hall explained in her post. “The reality is, books are optioned all the time, with only a small percentage actually making it to the big and small screen. So while I don’t know whether this will become a reality, what I do know is that Luc & Oliver are in the best and safest hands with the team at A24.”
Who is in the Boyfriend Material cast?
As you might have already assumed, Boyfriend Material isn’t far enough in the production process to have a cast. It hasn’t even landed a showrunner or screenwriter yet! Alas, that doesn’t stop fans from throwing actors’ names into the ring, which Hall also addressed in their Instagram post. “PS: a very gentle plea to let the people whose job it is to try and make BM into a tv series do their job,” the author said. “So please don’t put pressure on them or any actors you think should be hired.” (You can let us know who you want to see as Luc and Oliver in the comments below, though!)
What is Boyfriend Material book about?
The first of Hall’s London’s Calling series — which includes 2022’s Husband Material and the upcoming Father Material — is centered around Luc O’Donnell. He’s the son of rock stars and had a turbulent, troubled upbringing, which has been tabloid fodder for as long as he can remember. When he needs to clean up his image, Luc decides to start fake-dating the put-together Oliver Blackwood, a successful barrister and ethical vegetarian who’s never been involved in a scandal once. Despite being opposites, Luc and Oliver have undeniable chemistry, and they have to decide if they can make a real relationship work.
