Do Aang and Katara end up together in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Aang and Katara in 'Avatar: The Last Air Bender'

Nickelodeon

Kataang fans can rest easy: Aang’s one-sided crush, which starts at the beginning of the series, is eventually reciprocated. Aang and Katara have a slow-burning friends-to-lovers arc. In fact, during the brief epilogue set after the gang defeats Fire Lord Ozai (Mark Hamill), Aang and Katara share a kiss in the final shot of the series. In the spinoff sequel series The Legend of Korra, we find out that they got married and had three kids: Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin. They stayed together until Aang passed away at 66.

When do Aang and Katara first kiss?

Though their feelings develop and become clearer across Book 2 and Book 3, Aang and Katara don’t actually kiss on-screen until the finale. We also don’t see them become a full-fledged couple, since that moment essentially serves as the start of their official relationship. However, if we’re being technical, it’s implied that Aang and Katara kiss in Book 2, Episode 2, aka “The Cave of Two Lovers.” Katara suggests that they kiss to escape the cave, but it fades to black before we see them actually go through with it.

Who are Katara’s other love interests in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Jet and Katara in 'Avatar: The Last Air Bender'

Nickelodeon

Katara becomes infatuated with Jet in Book 1, Episode 10, which is titled after the character. Jet and his Freedom Fighters rescue Team Avatar when they walk into a Fire Nation camp. Katara’s crush makes her reluctant to believe that Jet’s all-consuming hatred for all Fire Nation people is dangerous. Eventually, Katara sees the truth when Jet reveals he has no qualms about harming innocent people in pursuit of his goal.

After Jet disbands the Freedom Fighters, Katara and her friends meet him again months later in Ba Sing Se, where he went as a refugee. Though Katara is rightfully cold toward Jet at first, she eventually helps Jet regain his memory when he’s brainwashed by Ba Sing Se’s secret police. Any possibility of a full reconciliation and romance between the two is shut down in Episode 17, “Lake Laogai,” when Jet dies of an earth-bending wound, trying to escape the police.

Other than Jet, Katara doesn’t have any other canon love interests, though fans have often shipped her with Zuko, particularly after he joins Team Avatar and undergoes his redemption arc. Their most pivotal episode is in Book 3, Episode 16 (“The Southern Raiders”). Together, Katara and Zuko track down the Fire Nation soldier who killed Katara’s mother and open up about their pasts. They bond, and Katara fully accepts Zuko into their group for the first time.

Who does Sokka end up with Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Sokka and Suki in 'Avatar: The Last Air Bender'

Nickelodeon

Sokka and Suki, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, are endgame as far as the first original series goes. Suki’s appearances are scattered throughout after she meets the gang in Book 1, during which she bests Sokka in battle, and it rubs him the wrong way. Still, Suki offers to train Sokka, and they grow closer. After Sokka apologizes for being sexist and not treating Suki like the warrior she is, Suki kisses Sokka’s cheek. They part ways, each doing their part to fight in the war against the Fire Nation, but they’re eventually reunited.

When do Sokka and Suki first kiss?

Suki and Sokka reunite in Book 2, Episode 12 (“The Serpent’s Pass”), to help a group of refugees. After what happened with Yue (Johanna Braddy) — more on that below — is unnecessarily protective of Suki. He eventually reveals that he lost someone he cared about, and Suki confirms that she cared about him, too. She tries to kiss him, but Sokka dodges it. Once they’ve made it through The Serpent’s Pass safely, Sokka initiates a kiss with her.

They don’t see each other again until Sokka discovers that Suki was put in a Fire Nation prison. In Book 3, Episode 14 (“The Boiling Rock”), Sokka rescues Suki, and they share their second kiss. From then on, Suki becomes more involved in Team Avatar, and her relationship with Sokka becomes more stable. In the finale, they sabotage the Fire Nation’s air fleet together, and the epilogue gives them a happy ending. Though The Legend of Korra doesn’t reveal their romantic future, it’s presumed by fans that they stayed together, though none of their children were mentioned.

What happens between Sokka and Yue?

Sokka and Yue’s romance is brief, though it has a deep impact on the former. With the goal of finding a water-bending master to teach Aang, the gang goes to the Northern Water Tribe and meets its princess, Yue. She almost died as an infant, but the Moon Spirit saved her, tying their life forces together.

Sokka was smitten at first sight, and Yue returned his feelings, though she informed him she couldn’t act on them because she was engaged. Her family arranged for her to marry a warrior for the good of their nation, though there was no love between them.

When the tribe is attacked by the Fire Nation in Season 1, Episodes 19 and 20 (“The Siege of the North”), the Moon Spirit is injured, so Yue sacrifices herself to save it. She kisses Sokka right before she vanishes.

Yue still has an impact on Sokka, even after he gets with Suki. In Book 3, Episode 17 (“The Ember Island Players”), Team Avatar watches a play about themselves. Sokka is brought to tears when Yue’s death is depicted.

Who does Zuko end up with in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Nickelodeon

Zuko ends up with Mai (Cricket Leigh), who is originally an ally of his evil sister Azula (Grey DeLisle). They start dating between Book 2 and Book 3, when Zuko rejoined the Fire Nation and his sister’s side, and it’s hinted that they’ve had feelings for each other since their childhood. They’re an established couple in Season 3, Episode 1 (“The Awakening”), which is when they share their first kiss.

Their relationship is rocky from there. Zuko gets angry at Mai for being emotionally unavailable in Book 3, Episode 5 (“The Beach”). Mai breaks up with him temporarily, though they get back together by the end of the episode. In Episode 10 (“The Day of Black Sun”), Zuko changes his allegiances, leaving the Fire Nation to train the Avatar in fire-bending. Before he departs, Zuko leaves a note for Mai saying that he is breaking up with her. Zuko misses her during his time away — he only broke up with her so she wouldn’t be deemed a traitor.

After Zuko and some of the gang are imprisoned by the Fire Nation (Episode 15, “The Boiling Rock, Part 2”), he sees Mai again. Mai is hurt that Zuko left her and tells Zuko that he’s betraying their nation. However, in the end, Mai helps Zuko escape, blindsiding Azula. Mai tells her former ally that she loves Zuko more than she fears Azula. Mai is arrested, and we don’t see her reunite with Zuko until Ozai is overthrown.

In the finale, Mai helps Zuko get ready for his coronation as Fire Lord. They kiss, and Mai tells Zuko to never “break up with [her] again.” In The Legend of Korra, it’s revealed that Zuko eventually had a daughter named Izumi, but her mother wasn’t confirmed, leaving his fate with Mai unclear.

Who does Toph end up with in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Toph in 'Avatar: The Last Air Bender'

Nickelodeon

Though Toph develops a one-sided crush on Sokka, she doesn’t get a full-fledged romance in the show. Her crush is confirmed in “The Serpent’s Pass,” when she accidentally kisses Suki, thinking its Sokka, for saving her from drowning. Even in The Legend of Korra, the father of Toph’s two daughters, Suyin and Lin, isn’t revealed on screen, so it can be presumed that she never gets a romance.
