Is ‘The Love Hypothesis’ Spicy? A Guide to Olive & Adam’s Hottest Book Scenes
What To Know
- The Love Hypothesis Prime Video rom-com is based on Ali Hazelwood’s novel.
- The upcoming movie adaptation has an R rating.
- Hazelwood’s book has several spicy moments.
Rom-coms aren’t traditionally known to bring the heat. Rarely do they even include a single fade-to-black sex scene, let alone go all the way and earn an R-rating. Prime Video’s The Love Hypothesis, however, won’t be one of them. We know that Ali Hazelwood’s novel of the same name doesn’t shy away from spice, and neither will the adaptation.
The Love Hypothesis follows biology PhD student Olive (Lili Reinhart), who makes a fake dating deal with professor Adam (Tom Bateman). Those familiar with the fake dating trope know that it’s only a matter of time until real feelings get involved. But before a full love confession arrives, Olive and Adam find themselves in some spicy situations. Like, fan-yourself-level moments.
If you haven’t yet read the book, you may be wondering just how many of them could make it into the movie, which Reinhardt says contains “the most intense sex scene” she’s ever filmed. (We weren’t kidding about needing that fan.) Lucky for you, Swooon has a full breakdown of every spicy moment below.
How spicy is The Love Hypothesis?
On the chili pepper scale, we’d give it a two-and-a-half out of five, simply because there aren’t many full sex scenes in the book. One of Olive and Adam’s fake-dating rules is “no sex,” so it takes a minute for them to get all the way there. Olive also isn’t very interested in sex in general before she realizes her feelings for Adam.
The one that Hazelwood does write in full detail, though, is seriously hot. We’re talking about the famous — at least, it’s famous in our circle — Chapter 16. (Well, technically Chapters 15, 16, and 17.) It’s the only full-length sex scene in the book. Up until then, Olive and Adam only exchange kisses, most of them part of their “performance.”

What happens in Chapter 16 of The Love Hypothesis?
The ball technically gets rolling in Chapter 15, when Olive and Adam attend a Boston science conference and share a hotel room. Their forced proximity and Olive’s growing feelings for Adam — spoiler alert: Adam has been in love with Olive the whole time — lead Olive to ask if they can sleep together.
Adam is hesitant for a few reasons. He thinks she’s in love with someone else, and he isn’t sure it’s what Olive wants. Olive quickly informs him that his second assumption isn’t true. She wonders out loud if Adam isn’t attracted to her — which he refutes by grabbing her hand and pressing it you-know-where. That’s one way to get your point across.
After a heavy makeout session, Adam moves his mouth lower, leading to one of the most talked-about moments of the entire book. There’s no way to put it delicately: Adam fits Olive’s entire boob in his mouth. (Yes, really.) Olive’s into it, but Adam senses that she’s overthinking. He fingers her, which she’s into, too, but Adam notices she’s tense again.
Olive admits that she’s only had sex a few times in her life. Worried about her inexperience, Adam stops and asks if she’s comfortable with sex. Explaining that she only feels attraction to people she trusts and likes, Olive assures Adam that he’s among the rare few who does it for her. Adam concedes but switches gears: He eats her out. Olive doesn’t expect to come quickly, but she does.
That’s when they finally get to the main event, during which Adam memorably says, “You can take it.” (It’s a reader-favorite, obviously.) You can guess what comes next. When it’s all over, Olive goes down on him, something she’s never done before. After all, they only have one night together, and they need to make the most out of it.
So yeah, we can only hope Chapter 16 plays out in all its sexy glory on-screen, though based on everything the cast has said, we’re optimistic about our chances. Readers, tell us what you thought of The Love Hypothesis’ spice in the comments below!
