Bennifer wasn’t meant to be, but that doesn’t mean that there’s any bad blood between the former spouses.

First linked to each other in 2001, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were initially engaged from 2002 to 2004. The famous twosome did not tie the knot at that time, but they rekindled their love story in 2021. They finally married in 2022, but their fairy tale was officially over just three years later.

Opening up to GQ, Affleck is adamant that there wasn’t “some major fracture” in their relationship. He even states that he has “nothing but respect” for his ex.

In a rare interview about his personal life, Affleck addressed his split. “There’s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. But honestly … the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting,” he said. “There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue [about our divorce]. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no, ‘This is what happened.'”

The father of three concluded, “It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do.”

The Argo director is known for often evading questions about his personal life. He’s emphasized that he prefers to keep his non-professional side private. This is in stark difference to Lopez, who released a documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Toldin partnership with her visual album, This Is Me … Now. The 52-year-old explained why he didn’t participate in the documentary. “Part of it was, ‘OK if I’m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way and in a way that’s interesting,'” he said. “Because I thought it was an interesting examination.”

The actor was quick to reveal his first reaction to being the subject of the documentary. “You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship,” he admitted. Despite their split, Affleck still has a lot of love for Lopez. He commended the “Let’s Get Loud” singer for being someone who “handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have.”

He confessed, “My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers. As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things. And so I thought, ‘Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that?’ Because … I love and support this person. I believe in them. They’re great. I want people to see that.”
