Sara Waisglass is best known for playing Max in Ginny & Georgia, which showcases both her comedic and dramatic chops, but she’s started making a name for herself in the romance genre, too. Earlier this year, the actress headlined Tubi’s How to Make a Popularity Contest rom-com, and now, she’s working on a YA rom-dram called Into the Deep Blue.
The movie, which doubles as a book, follows two best friends. Waisglass will star opposite Maxton Hall — The World Between Us actor Damian Hardung. Both of their characters are coping with major losses, and their lives are complicated by their growing feelings for each other. “It’s gonna be so good,” Waisglass told Swooon. “I’m so excited about it. It’s been a dream of mine to do a book-to-movie adaptation… [Into the Deep Blue] is gonna be really cool.”
In April 2026, a handful of new cast members were announced. Keep reading for everything Swooon knows about Into the Deep Blue, including the new cast members, release date, and more.
When is Into the Deep Blue coming out?
There isn’t an official release date yet for Into the Deep Blue, though Deadline revealed that filming was underway in April 2026. The outlet also shared that production company North.five.six. is “handling worldwide sales and will continue talking to buyers about the project at the upcoming Cannes market,” so we’ll see if it lands a theatrical or streaming release.
Who is in the Into the Deep Blue cast?
Waisglass will star as Fiona. “Sara IS Fiona,” screenwriter Jennifer E. Archer wrote on Instagram. “She radiates warmth, she’s fiercely talented, and she’s pretty damn hilarious too! She will bring so much heart to this role. I can’t wait to meet Fiona through her eyes. I could not be more in love with her, and y’all are not prepared for the magic that’s about to happen.”
Before Waisglass signed on, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story star India Amarteifio was set to play Fiona, according to an August 2024 Deadline article. The switch-up came after singer Sabrina Carpenter was announced as the lead all the way back in 2022.
Waisglass’ future scene partner is no stranger to the young adult romance genre. He’s the lead love interest in Prime Video’s German-language series Maxton Hall, which recently wrapped filming its third and final season. Waisglass told Swooon that she has yet to watch Hardung’s show, but she’d already started emailing her costar as of December 2025.

Erika Prevost, who played the recurring role of Tala in Prime Video’s The Boys, has also signed on to the film. Per Deadline, she’s playing Fiona’s best friend and coworker, May, whose world involves parties and hookups. After Prevost’s casting was announced, it was revealed that Hallmark star Luke Macfarlane, Samantha Brown (From), Bryce Wynter (We Were Liars), and Colm Feore (Landman) had joined. Their characters haven’t been revealed.
Who is making Into the Deep Blue?
Archer penned the Into the Deep Blue script before it became a novel. Its first iteration was selected for the 2022 Nicholl Fellowship by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Archer went on to publish the book version in September 2025. Jonathan Wright, known for 2017’s Awakening the Zodiac, is on board to direct. Constantin Film, which made the Colleen Hoover adaptation Regretting You, is executive-producing and financing.
“Jennifer Archer has crafted a poignant and witty love story full of richly complicated yet relatable characters. With young adult themes of heartache and hope in an uncertain world, this is the right moment for this film. Into the Deep Blue is a wide, commercial feature with a wonderful ensemble cast and as we expand our reach to champion films in all stages of their life cycle, this is exactly the type of project that Constantin Film is looking to support,” Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer said, per Deadline.
What is Into the Deep Blue about?
The story is described as perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon’s The Sun is Also a Star and John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. Nick (Hardung) and Fiona (Waisglass) become best friends after meeting in group therapy, each grieving the loss of their mothers during their senior years of high school. Despite sharing everything with each other, they’re determined to keep each other in the friend zone: Nick doesn’t believe in happily ever after, and Fiona wonders if grief is all they have in common. When they go on a weekend trip together, Nick and Fiona have to decide whether to face their deepening feelings or cut each other off.
