While fans of Love on the Spectrum may recognize the name Cian O’Clery as the off-screen interviewer of their favorite cast members, there is a lot viewers don’t know about the man who brought the beloved series to life.

As a creator of the series, Cian told Netflix, “For us, that was the most important thing, representing that, so that people don’t make assumptions about someone just because of a diagnosis.” Ahead of Season 4, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about the series director and producer.

Who is Cian O’Clery?

Cian is a documentary maker, best known as the director and producer of Love on the Spectrum. Since Cian is the interviewer for the series as well, viewers may recognize his voice from chatting with cast members during the first three seasons. Cian is not on the autism spectrum himself, leading him to tell viewers that he is always learning. He told Netflix, “I think the most important thing is to never assume that you’re an expert, which I’m not.”

Ahead of Season 4, cast member Dani Bowman posted a LOTS-style interview with Cian, where he revealed his own thoughts on love. How did Cian O’Clery come up with Love on the Spectrum?

Before there was Love on the Spectrum U.S., Cian started the franchise in Australia. He revealed to Vanity Fair that the idea came about while he was working on another project about people on the autism spectrum, Employable Me. He explained, “We just met so many young adults in that process who expressed not just a desire to find work and employment, but to find love. There were a lot of people who were really struggling—some people in their 20s, 30s, who’d never even been on a date.”

After starting Australia’s Love on the Spectrum in 2019, Cian brought the series to the States in 2022. Now, the American series is heading into its fourth season with seven Emmys in tow, including Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program of 2025.

Does Cian O’Clery cast Love on the Spectrum himself?

From on-camera interviewing to directing and producing, it seems Cian has a hand in every step of the Love on the Spectrum filming process. However, anyone who’s watched the series will tell you that it is nothing without its phenomenal cast, including Dani, Tanner Smith, Madison Marilla, James B. Jones, Connor Tomlinson, Abbey Romeo, and more favorites. Turns out, Cian plays a major role in casting the series as well.

He told Vanity Fair, “We do all the casting ourselves as a producing team, which really helps because there’s continuity. Often, the same person they first spoke to is the person who’s then with them. That consistency—keeping a really small team—I think is really helpful.”
