What To Know

  • Netflix has announced a new YA romance series, Calabasas, set at an elite private school.
  • The series is based on Via Bleidner’s memoir, If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous by Now.
  • Showrunner Chris Van Dusen is joined by Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts as executive producers.

YA romance is here to stay! Along with Better Than the Movies and My Life with the Walter Boys Season 4, Netflix has revealed its newest young adult series, Calabasas.

The series takes place at an elite private school in Calabasas, the home of the Kardashians and more California elite. While we don’t know too much about the show just yet, Calabasas has become one of the most highly anticipated series on Netflix’s slate. That’s because Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen is in the driver’s seat as the showrunner and writer. Plus, he’s executive producing with Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts. Consider us sold!

“Calabasas is the kind of series I’ve always dreamed of making,” Van Dusen told Netflix. “It’s the kind of glamorous, bold, addictive, and emotionally-charged show I grew up obsessed with. The great teen dramas of that era proved TV could be escapist, provocative, and deeply personal all at once. To get to bring that type of wild ride to today’s audiences is incredibly exciting. And more obviously, I’ll take all the free or heavily-discounted smoothies from Erewhon I can get. That part, too.”

What is Calabasas about?

Calabasas adapts Via Bleidner’s memoir, If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous by Now: True Stories from Calabasas. Netflix teased, “At an elite private school in the country’s most exclusive town, the headmaster’s ambitious daughter is destined to have it all – until she’s swept into a forbidden romance with the one boy determined to burn down her glittering world instead of play by its rules. In Calabasas, where desires are never as clean as appearances suggest, falling in love might be the most dangerous rebellion of all.”

Who is behind Calabasas?

Bleidner’s memoir is in fantastic hands! Calabasas is helmed by Emmy-nominated producer and writer, and creator of Bridgerton, Chris Van Dusen. Van Dusen is joined by executive producers Kim Kardashian, Crescent Line Productions’ Alexandra Milchan and Martin Salgo, Belletrist’s Emma Roberts, Karah Preiss, and Matt Matruski, David Sweeney, and author Via Bleidner.

In the official announcement for the series, Jinny Howe, head of scripted series at Netflix US and Canada, told viewers, “It’s exciting to reunite with Chris Van Dusen and bring his distinct voice to Calabasas, alongside the powerhouse team of Kim Kardashian, Emma Roberts, and Alexandra Milchan. Full of romance and complicated relationships, this coming-of-age story is as emotionally sharp as it is grounded in the complex reality of finding your authentic self. We’re excited for this new creative chapter with Chris, and to work closely with him to bring this vibrant world to life.”

Who has been cast in Calabasas?

Right now, no one has been cast in Calabasas. That said, with Chris Van Dusen, Emma Roberts, and Kim Kardashian as executive producers, we’re sure this cast will be stacked.

When does Calabasas premiere?

There is no set premiere date for Calabasas yet. Seeing as the series has just been announced, fans shouldn’t expect to see it hit the streamer until late 2027 or early 2028.

What’s the difference between Calabasas Confidential & Calabasas?

While Calabasas Confidential and Calabasas can both be found in Erewhon, they exist in completely different aisles. Netflix’s Calabasas Confidential, which hits the streamer on May 29, is a reality TV series following the lives of college grads returning to Calabasas, rekindling old flames and feuds. Netflix’s Calabasas is an adaptation of Via Bleidner’s YA drama, If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous by Now: True Stories from Calabasas.
