‘Every Year After’s Abigail Cowen Talks Delilah’s Pregnancy & Romantic Future
What To Know
- Abigail Cowen stars as Delilah in Every Year After.
- She discussed expanding Delilah’s character from the book into the TV series.
- She also shared her hopes for Delilah in Season 2.
While Delilah may have been Percy‘s childhood frenemy in Every Summer After, viewers have fallen in love with the character in the Prime Video adaptation.
Brought to life by Abigail Cowen (who costarred with Sadie Soverall in Fate: The Winx Saga), Delilah Mason isn’t just a memory from Percy’s (Soverall) past. She’s living in Barry’s Bay, struggling with her own love life — or lack thereof. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for Every Year After Season 1 ahead.)
Halfway through the season, Delilah’s “starter” husband, Whit, calls off their marriage, leaving her love life wide open. From flashbacks with Jordie (Joseph Chiu), including the scene where Delilah admits she’s pregnant, and a kiss with a woman at a Halloween party in the finale, it’s clear a potential Season 2 romance is on the way.
Every Year After star Abigail Cowen sat down with Swooon to discuss how Delilah’s teen pregnancy and abortion impacted her going into adulthood, and her hopes for Delilah’s story moving forward.

During Episode 6, “Plan B,” a flashback to Percy and Sam (Matt Cornett) planning their first time reveals that Delilah had a teen pregnancy. While Delilah tries to lean on Percy for support, Percy’s too distracted by her own plans to pay her friend any attention. Instead, it’s Jordie who offers Delilah a shoulder to cry on and confronts Percy about not being there for her.
“I think it really impacted her,” Cowen told Swooon. “It’s a really big thing that she holds onto into adulthood, and that’s because she was kind of alone in it. I think that that plays into why she is the way that she is now, which is just, ‘Nothing’s wrong, everything’s great, I’m going to bury everything that has ever happened, and keep myself busy, and keep going.'”

Ultimately, Percy does come to Delilah’s side and drives with her to an off-screen abortion. “I think that is a humongous moment that is obviously traumatic for her, one that she has had to bury, so that she can just keep going,” Cowen revealed. “When I read that, my heart broke for her.”
While Delilah’s pregnancy and abortion are never discussed in the latter half of the timeline, it’s clear to see how she has been shaped by those experiences. As Cowen put it, “I feel like you start to kind of see the hurt [and] the humanity in her from that point going forward.”

Present day, Delilah ends up calling things off with Charlie (Michael Bradway) soon after her husband Whit asks for a divorce. While Jordie has always had a crush on Delilah, which seems to set up a love triangle between her, Jordie, and Chantal (Aurora Perrineau) going forward, Delilah’s most romantic moment in the finale comes during a Halloween party, when Percy and Chantal see Delilah kissing a woman. Could a queer romance be in Delilah’s future?
“I think she’s in a place of just focusing on herself for once, and really facing the demons that have been a part of her since she was young, and again, she’s run away from,” Cowen told Swooon. “I think she’s exploring because she got married at such a young age to Whit and kept disassociating from everything in her life. This is the time for her to finally be who she was supposed to be.”
Going forward, she shared, “I don’t know where she’s gonna land, but I think if there is a Season 2, I’d love to see her keep exploring, and I’d love to find out where she lands and how she grows.”
