What To Know

  • Amazon MGM Studios is developing a film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s Love, Theoretically.
  • The story centers around the romance between two physicists.
  • The project involves notable names including Colleen Hoover.

First, The Love Hypothesis was picked up for a movie adaptation for Prime Video, and now Love, Theoretically is getting the same treatment. It’s romance author Ali Hazelwood‘s world, and we’re just living in it. We wouldn’t have it any other way!

Just a few months before fans meet the movie version of Olive (Lili Reinhart) and Adam (Tom Bateman) in The Love Hypothesis movie, Amazon MGM Studios has secured the rights to her 2023 rom-com novel, Love, Theoretically.

If you’re part of the Hazelwood Hive like us, we’re sure you’re eager to know more about who’s bringing Jack and Elsie’s romance to life. Or, if you’re new here, you may be wondering what exactly the STEM-centric love story is about. Either way, Swooon has you covered with all the latest Love, Theoretically movie updates below.

What is the Love, Theoretically release date?

Deadline reported that the movie was in development on June 29, 2026. It comes a few weeks after Hazelwood gave Harper’s Bazaar an update in May 2026.

“The person who was supposed to write the script [for Love, Theoretically] is still attached,” the author said. “I’m still a huge, super, mega fan of this person. I don’t know that anything is going to happen. The road from something being optioned to something actually being made is just so long and so winding that sometimes announcing it is not even worth it.” (Thankfully, it’s moving full steam ahead now!)

Who is in the Love, Theoretically cast?

It’s too early for any casting news, but as soon as Hazelwood mentioned the Love, Theoretically adaptation a little while ago, Swooon got to work on making our dream cast. Let us know what you think of our picks to play Elsie, Jack, and the rest of the crew. (Just saying: We wouldn’t mind Off CampusStephen Kalyn in the lead role either. We know he’s another internet favorite for Jack.)

What is Love, Theoretically about?

The book is centered around Elsie Hannaway, a theoretical physicist. She struggles to make ends meet as an adjunct professor, so she has a side hustle as a fake girlfriend. Elsie is the ultimate people-pleaser and personality chameleon, letting her own needs and wants fall by the wayside, even when it comes to her loved ones.

Elsie’s favorite client has a suspicious older brother, Jack. When Elsie starts interviewing for a tenure position at MIT — which she desperately needs — Jack is on the hiring committee. Upon the discovery that he’s a famous experimental physicist, Elsie also finds out that she’s had one-sided beef with Jack for years. He accidentally ruined her mentor’s career and played a prank that made theoretical physicists look bad on a global scale.

Jack favors another candidate for the job over her, so Elsie sets out to prove that she’s the better pick. As they work together, Jack surprises her and understands her in a way no one has before.

Who is making Love, Theoretically?

Hazelwood isn’t the only romance titan attached to the project. It Ends With Us author Colleen Hoover will produce with her Heartbones Entertainment partner Lauren Levine. Magic Hour Entertainment’s Max Siemers and Tanner Anderson will also produce.

Along for the Ride director and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before writer Sofia Alvarez is directing, screenwriting, and executive producing. Last but not least, Hazelwood is executive producing, too.
