What To Know

  • Kenzie uses the term “turtle tongue” on Love Island USA Season 8.
  • She uses it to refer to Bryce’s kissing in Episode 1.
  • Bryce’s grandma brought it up weeks later during Family Day.

Before there were “french fries,” there was “turtle tongue.” Love Island USA Season 8 has introduced quite a few new terms to our vocab list, and during Thursday, July 9’s episode, “turtle tongue” came up once again, courtesy of Bryce Detloff’s grandmother Anne.

When their family members came to visit in Episode 32, Anne made quite the impression on viewers. She had a hilarious exchange with one of her grandson’s fellow Islanders, Kenzie Annis. When Kenzie told Anne that the group loved Bryce, Anne quipped, “Even if he has a turtle tongue, right?

Bryce had zero idea what they were talking about, making it even funnier. It was a callback to a comment Kenzie made during an Episode 1 confessional, which seems like eons ago. Maybe you started tuning in late, or you completely forgot about the “turtle tongue” thing — either way, we’re breaking down exactly the meaning behind it.

What does ‘turtle tongue’ mean?

In Episode 1 — mere minutes or hours after meeting for the first time — the Islanders participated in a compatibility challenge. In true Love Island USA fashion, a copious amount of making out was involved. Every guy and girl exchanged at least one steamy lip-lock, including Kenzie and Bryce, before deciding who to couple up with.

Kenzie’s kisses with Bryce, however, quickly revealed that they didn’t have chemistry. According to Kenzie, at least. “I went in being super attracted to Bryce. And then, when I kissed Bryce, it was like a turtle tongue,” she said in a confessional.

You can see Kenzie demonstrate what she means here. Basically, it’s when the kisser just barely pokes just the tip of their tongue out every once in a while, instead of fully committing to it.

Kenzie brought up the turtle tongue again during Episode 4, which involved yet another kissing-centric challenge. As Trinity Tatum and Bryce (enthusiastically) made out during the “Boss B*tches”-themed challenge, the show cut to Kenzie in a confessional. “Damn, she’s getting some of that turtle tongue right now,” she said.

Really, it’s no wonder Bryce’s grandma called Kenzie out, though it’s clear Trinity has no complaints. We’re adding this word to our lexicon immediately, BTW.
