After years of rumblings that a return to Genovia was in the works, The Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot spilled some major Princess Diaries 3 tea at BookCon 2026.
At the event, Cabot not only confirmed that a script for the highly anticipated threequel has been penned, but that the whole cast would be returning. She shared, “I’ve read the script. There is a part for everybody because there’s a thing that happens [where] everybody has to show up.” Looks like Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews won’t be alone in their Genovian comeback!

When will The Princess Diaries 3 be released?
Right now, there is no set release date for The Princess Diaries 3. Until the cast reunites to start filming, there appears to be no set production timeline. Be sure to bookmark this page and check back for more updates as they become available.
Talk of a third Princess Diaries movie has been in the works for years. Back in 2019, Hathaway had confirmed on Watch What Happens Live that there was a script for the third movie. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,” she said.
Hathaway then added, “It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”
A few months later, Andrews appeared on WWHL and gave another update, which confused some fans. “Well, the truth is I haven’t heard,” she said. “But there’s been talk about it for quite a while. I think [Anne] had or is having a second child, and she’s busy, and I’ve been busy. I think if it happens, it would be lovely, and if it doesn’t, I wouldn’t have known about it.”

Which cast members will return for The Princess Diaries 3?
While the official cast for the film has not been revealed, Cabot confirmed that there “is a part for everybody,” though it’s unclear who “everybody” includes. Now, Cabot has spilled on at least two featured players set to return. She shared, “Robert Schwartzman‘s in it. Chris Pine, obviously in it, although he says he’s not, but he is.”
Fans may recall Schwartzman as Michael Moscovitz, Mia’s love interest from the first movie, who didn’t return for the second. While Mia ended up with Nicholas Devereaux, played by Pine, in the sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, some fans still argue that Mia and Michael should have been endgame.
We’d assume that “everybody” also includes Heather Matarazzo (Lilly Moscovitz), Héctor Elizondo (Joe), and Caroline Goodall (Mia’s mom, Helen). At this time, there has not been confirmation that other favorites featured in the first two films, like Mandy Moore (Lana), Raven-Symoné (Asana), and Erik von Detten (Josh), will return.

When will The Princess Diaries 3 start filming?
Currently, there is no set start date for filming The Princess Diaries 3. That said, Cabot confirmed that the production team has rented a castle for the film that they are waiting to use.
“I don’t know when they’re going to film it because Annie [Anne] Hathaway, as you have probably seen, is making a million movies right now,” Cabot explained. “But one of these days, she’s going to go to the castle that we have actually rented and is sitting there waiting.” Sounds like filming could start any day now!
