The drama on Farmer Wants a Wife has been turned up, thanks to the first group date of Season 4.
The show’s Tuesday, May 5, episode picked up with Sean Cavanaugh and Brett Maverick choosing to keep all five of their women on their farms for another week. Braden Pridemore, meanwhile, chose to send home one of his contestants, Lauren, after realizing their connection wasn’t as strong as his with others. (Warning: Spoilers for the May 5 episode ahead!)
Following the elimination — and some more work on the farm — the guys and their ladies traveled to the Laurel Park Race Track in Maryland for their first-ever group date. What was supposed to be a fun day at the races quickly took a dramatic turn, as host Kimberly Williams-Paisley surprised the men with three new women selected by their family and friends.
“That was a crazy experience overall. I was expecting just to go in there and bet on some horses and have fun,” Sean exclusively told Swooon on the Season 4 set last year. “And then, in the middle of all that, the host, Kimberly Williams, said, ‘Hey, there’s another girl here to see you.’ And that was a huge surprise to me. I was not expecting it whatsoever, but I’m really glad she came in.”
Brett, for his part, said his initial reaction to the news was “not a good one.” He shared, “I was not expecting it, and honestly, I was kind of bummed because it’s like, I’m having a hard enough time ciphering through the emotions and the feelings that I have with the girls that I do have on the farm. So, to bring one more into the mix, it was a lot.”
However, all three guys were charmed by the women their loved ones picked for them. “She’s incredibly sweet. We had a really good conversation,” Brett said of his contestant, Sophia.

Braden’s new contestant, Schyler, also made a memorable first impression. “I think she’s great. Yeah. It was unexpected, for sure,” he told the cameras after their initial conversation.
Sean was pleasantly surprised with his new pick, Rhianna, but expressed concerns over whether inviting her back to the farm would be the right decision. “The only thing of my concern is right after I met Rhianna, the girl that just walked in, one of the other girls I’ve spent a lot of time with, Macey, pulled me aside and she said, ‘Are you gonna bring this girl home?'” he told Swooon. “And in that moment, I was like, ‘No. I respect you guys too much to bring a girl home.’ And I just think, in that moment, I really wasn’t gonna send her home, and that’s the decision I made.”
As seen in the episode, Sean “spoke too soon,” as a one-on-one conversation with Rhianna ultimately changed his mind. “She really opened up and explained herself, and I was like, ‘I feel for this girl because she’s so confident and she’s out of her comfort zone, but she was still able to put herself out there.’ And I was like, ‘I respect this girl so much for doing that. I, at least, have to give her a chance,'” he stated. “So, I did end up inviting her back to California, and I just really hope that doesn’t screw up the other relationships I have back at home.”
Fans will have to wait until next week’s episode to see the fallout of Sean’s decision, as well as how Braden and Brett’s women reacted to the news that another contestant would be joining their farms.
“The other girls really liked her, which made that decision a lot more harder. If they hadn’t have, I wouldn’t have brought her on,” Brett said of Sophia. “So overall, it was kind of up and down. A lot of emotions. A lot of whirlwinds. But at the end of the day, I think everything worked out the way it was supposed to.”
