‘Every Year After’s Carley Fortune Talks Casting Alice Everly & Season 2 Hopes
What To Know
- Every Year After has yet to be renewed for a second season.
- Fans are eager to find out who will be cast as Alice Everly, the One Golden Summer lead.
- Carley Fortune revealed to Swooon what she’s looking for in casting Alice for a potential second season.
While Prime Video has yet to reveal whether Every Year After will return for a highly anticipated Season 2, which would likely follow Carley Fortune‘s Every Summer After sequel, One Golden Summer, some of us already have our sights set on another summer in Barry’s Bay.
Fortune sat down with Swooon to reveal her favorite moments from the first season and what she hopes to see in the second. Looking forward to the introduction we’ve all been waiting for, she also spilled on casting Alice Everly, the female lead of One Golden Summer, and Charlie Florek‘s (Michael Bradway) love interest.
During Season 1, viewers got a taste of what it would be like if Charlie became romantically involved with Delilah (Abigail Cowen), something we don’t see in the book. As Fortune put it, “I didn’t expect it, but I also wasn’t surprised to see it.” Seeing as Delilah had a massive teenage crush on Charlie in both the book and the series, the author shared, “If I look at a version of that book where Delilah happened to live at the lake instead, or had a summer house at the lake, the idea of her and Charlie hooking up is like kind of a no-brainer.”
As it turns out, Delilah was always one of Fortune’s favorite characters from the Every Summer After universe. She shared, “Delilah is a character I have thought about as someone who could have her own book one day.” That said, after the series has come to life on screen, she explained, “I wouldn’t do that anymore. I think that the story that [showrunner Amy B. Harris] has created for her in the show is really, really wonderful, and I don’t think it’s my place to come in and create a new path.”

While Season 1 gave us closure on Charlie’s relationship with Delilah, there is still one leading lady we have yet to see on our screens: Alice Everly. For those who don’t know, Alice is an introverted freelance photographer who finds herself in Barry’s Bay with her Nan over the summer. When Charlie is tasked with looking after them, the three share an unexpected season together.
“The ending [of Season 1] really lines up with One Golden Summer, and you know Amazon has the rights to One Golden Summer. If we have a Season 2, I know it’s Amy’s intention to bring that storyline into the second season, and that ending sets us up for that book and that story big time,” Fortune told Swooon.
When asked what she was looking for as an author in casting Alice Everly, Fortune made it clear she isn’t looking for a carbon copy of the character she physically described in the book. “Alice Everly is a redhead, and she has red, curly hair. However, Sadie [Soverall, who plays Percy] has dark red hair, Abby [Cowen] has red hair. So, we’ve got two redheads already. Are we going to have a trio of redheads in the show? I don’t know. But you know, that’s not really what’s important.

She continued, “I think what’s important is that Alice is someone who is really at a crossroads in her life. She has said yes to everything and everyone and found herself with nothing, and she needs to be someone who’s very soft. She’s a caregiver. She puts everyone before her, and she is someone who prefers to be in the background. She’s very different from the women on Every Year After, and I think you need somebody who can show that softness, but still is someone who is very steely inside. She is actually very, very strong.” Fortune added, “I also really want to see her with her grandma, Nan.”
