‘Off Campus’: What Is the ‘Call Dean’ Scene? Dean & Allie’s Pivotal Book Moment, Explained
What To Know
- The “Call Dean” scene is a pivotal moment in Elle Kennedy’s The Score.
- Off Campus Season 2 will follow The Score, which is about Allie and Dean’s romance.
- Its inclusion in Season 2 is highly anticipated by book readers.
Phone calls are already an important part of Dean (Stephen Kalyn) and Allie’s (Mika Abdalla) relationship in Off Campus. After all, Allie ignoring her “DO NOT CALL” instructions — alarm emojis and all — is what kicked off their rollercoaster romance in the first place. But even that iconic Season 1 moment doesn’t hold a candle to the real “Call Dean” scene.
Though the cast played coy when ET asked if they’d filmed the fan-favorite book scene yet, we know that Mika Abdalla was eager to shoot it back in May. When Swooon asked which scene from The Score she was hoping made it into the show, Abdalla said, “I think the most iconic one is the ‘Call Dean’ scene. I think that just has to be in there.”
The actress told us that before it was widely known that Off Campus Season 2 would adapt Dean and Allie’s The Score, the third book in Elle Kennedy’s hockey romance series. But now that Off Campus Season 2’s central couple has been revealed, filming is underway, and the cast has spoken about the “Call Dean” scene on more than one occasion, we thought we’d do the show-only fans a favor and break down exactly what happens.
(Warning: The below contains spoilers for The Score by Elle Kennedy.)
What is the “Call Dean” scene in Off Campus?
Up until Chapter 24 — which arrives about three quarters through the book — Dean and Allie are seeing each other in secret and don’t define their relationship. After a trip to New York for Thanksgiving, which sees Dean meet Allie’s disapproving dad. They spend the break in Dean’s penthouse, and they meet Beau and his sister for a night out on the town.
When they get back to campus, Allie has a confrontation with her ex, Sean. He shows up at her dorm drunk. He found out about Allie’s hookups with Dean. He demands to know if they’re a couple, and when she explains that they’re just sleeping together — though obviously feelings are involved at this point — Sean insists she’s not the type of girl to sleep around. He wonders if Allie cheated on him with Dean. He wonders if he needs to get tested for an STD, knowing Dean’s promiscuous reputation.

“Why the f**k would I want to get back together with a disease-ridden whore—” he said before Garrett, who’s in the dorm with Hannah, cuts him off. (Yep, if you thought Sean couldn’t get worse, just you wait.)
Thankfully, Garrett throws Sean out to the curb, but the damage is already done. Hannah comforts Allie as she breaks down. Allie realizes that she needs Dean to comfort her. She asks Hannah to call Dean and ask him to come over. Obviously, Hannah is confused when Allie says, “Please… just call him. I need him.”
Of course, Dean doesn’t hesitate to answer the call. Dean’s in a hurry to get to Allie in her room when Hannah stops him and demands to know what’s going on. He’s pissed when Hannah and Garrett give him the gist of what Sean said, so he breezes past the two of them without giving either an explanation of his connection to Allie.
As he comforts her, Allie explains that she doesn’t think that she’s cut out for casual sex. It’s too confusing for her, sleeping with Dean when they’re “not actually together.” “We’re together,” Dean interrupts her. He assures Allie that he wants to be in a relationship with her. She tells him that being with Dean “feels right,” and boom: DeanAllie are a couple for the first time.
Of course, that’s not the end of Dean and Allie’s story. The “Call Dean” scene marks the beginning of their full-fledged relationship, which isn’t without its angst. There’s some major low points for the two of them in the final third of the book. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
